What's Mondstadt?

Mondstadt is one of the seven regions in Teyvat, and the first in which the Traveler starts to look for their lost sibling. It is the nation that worships Lord Barbatos, the Anemo Archon.

city of freedom that lies in the northeast of Teyvat. From amongst mountains and wide-open plains, carefree breezes carry the scent of dandelions — a gift from the Anemo God, Barbatos — across Cider Lake to Mondstadt, which sits on an island in the middle of the lake.

Mondstadt is inspired by the real-world country of Germany and Switzerland. Many of Mondstadt's characters have German names or titles. In German, Mondstadt also means “Moon City”. Overall, Mondstadt has a casual, laid-back atmosphere derived from their belief in freedom over all else.

Culture

  • Alcohol plays a major role in Mondstadt - Dandelion wine is their most famous beverage. Of the wineries in Mondstadt, the Dawn Winery is one of the oldest and most influential, with over a thousand years of history.
  • True to Mondstadt's reputation as the nation of wine and song, alcohol comprises a defining part of Mondstadt cuisine. Mondstadt's notable dishes include Moon Pie, "Pile 'Em Up", Mondstadt Grilled Fish, and Mondstadt Hash Browns. Milk, butter, cheese, and cream are commonly used in Mondstadt dishes.
  • Under Barbatos' blessing, most of Mondstadt has a gentle climate that allows crops to flourish. Fresh fruits such as sunsettias and apples are abundant, as well as grapes for making wine.
  • Much of the City of Mondstadt is constructed in Gothic style and Fachwerk (timberframing).
  • Lyres play a prominent part in Mondstadt's traditional music, dating back to Decarabian's era. During that time, lyres were much larger and stood on the floor, much like a harp.
  • Mondstadt fashion is generally inspired by tracht, the traditional garments in German-speaking regions.
  • Wind gliding holds a lot of cultural value in Mondstadt
  • Roses in Mondstadt, instead of love, represent the saying "As wine bottles are corked, so too are my lips sealed." It encourages people to keep one another's secrets.

  • Lore

Ingame Mondstadt story line exists as a prologue that consists of three acts: Act I: The Outlander Who Caught the Wind, Act II: For a Tomorrow Without Tears, Act III: Song of the Dragon and Freedom

Dvalin, once the guardian dragon of Mondstadt, falls under the corrupting influence of the Abyss Order, turning into Stormterror and wreaking havoc. The Traveler and the Knights of Favonius embark on a quest to free Dvalin from his corrupted state and uncover the Abyss Order's sinister intentions. Through battles and revelations, they discover the truth behind Dvalin's corruption and work towards redemption, ultimately restoring peace to Mondstadt and forming a new alliance with the dragon they once fought against. The Knights of Favonius, led by Jean, request the Traveler's help in stopping Dvalin's chaos. Afterward, Venti is attacked outside the church, and his Gnosis is stolen by La Signora, number eight of the Fatui Harbingers.

The Mondstadt story playthrough takes around 16 hours.

    Archon war

2600 years ago, in the midst of the Archon War, the city of Mondstadt was located northwest of the current location, what is now known as Stormterror's Lair. Back then, there were two warring gods: Decarabian, the God of Storms, and Andrius, the King of the North Wind. At that time, Mondstadt was a wasteland of ice, snow, and endless icy blizzards, almost impossible for humans to live in. The entity who would become Barbatos was but a wisp of the wind, an elf with little to no power. During his time as a wisp of the wind, Barbatos befriended a young bard who dreamt of freedom. Eventually, Barbatos and the Nameless Bard, alongside Decarabian's disillusioned lover Amos and an unnamed knight, raised an army against the God of Storms. They eventually emerged victorious, taking down the archon and freeing the people from his stormy cage. Unfortunately, both Amos and the bard were among the casualties, causing deep regret for Barbatos. After Decarabian's demise, Barbatos claimed a divine seat in Celestia, becoming the first — and only — Anemo Archon among The Seven. Barbatos' first use of his powers was to take the form of the young bard as a way to honor him. After that, he used his wind powers to shape the land to make it prosperous for his people, teaching them the values of freedom. He then left the people to themselves, refusing to rule them directly and risk becoming a tyrant himself

    Festivals

    Windblume Festival

The Windblume Festival is a celebration of love and friendship. Much of the festival revolves around the titular Windblume, a flower which was said to have been used as a symbol of freedom and resistance during Decarabian's era. Over the ages, the nature of the Windblume has been lost, and so which flower found throughout Mondstadt is the "real" Windblume is a subject of popular debate during the festival.

    Ludi Harpastum

Ludi Harpastum is a fifteen-day festival filled with food, games, and music, intended to commemorate how Barbatos taught his people to brew wine and live freely. The champion of the games gets to choose a maiden, who will throw the Harpastum — a ball wrapped in red cloth — at the end of the festival. Whoever picks up the ball is said to enjoy good fortune for a year.

    Weinlesefest

Weinlesefest is a festival in Mondstadt revolving around making new wine and inviting the Anemo Archon to drink if the Anemo Archon is happy with the wine.

    Dragonspine

This is Dragonspine, historically known as Vindagnyr, an enormous mountain that holds the remains of the venomous dragon, Durin, who fell here after the battle with Dvalin. Few adventurers dare attempt to conquer this unforgiving environment marked by deep snow, sheer cold, poisonous blood, and monsters. But such things will not dissuade the star-faring Traveler from journeying here.

    Before Durin

Long before Durin's fall, there existed a civilization called Sal Vindagnyr on the mountain. Much of its archaeological remains are centered on the Entombed City - Ancient Palace. There are also records contained on Ancient Carvings; and in the descriptions of the weapon Snow-Tombed Starsilver, as well as the catalyst Frostbearer; and of the Princess' Box, Priest's Box, and Scribe's Box; as well as frescos within the Mural Room where the Snow-Tombed Starsilver is found. Together they tell of a kingdom, a princess gifted with the power to foretell through visions and painting, and of a tragedy or fall of that kingdom. The fall is brought about by the Skyfrost Nail which falls and destroys the silver ley line tree on the mountain- this causes the change in climate from verdant to frostbitten. Artifacts found in Dragonspine tell the story of the Princess and people of that time, and the story of an outlander entrusted with the Starsilver weapon — when the outlander returns from his quest he finds the city dead and abandoned, and leaves the weapon in the secret chamber. The decoded messages ("Record of Serial No.") found on broken Ruin Guards in the region may also be related, but also may relate to the fall of Khaenri'ah, from where Ruin Guards originate.
